Cape Town - Outdoor Activities

When your four walls feel too much, here are some fun outdoor activities.

Four months into lockdown, and we can say with certainty: we’ve done all the puzzles, have baked too much banana bread and watched almost everything on Netflix! And, while the experts agree that home is the safest place to be (in terms of mitigating the spread of the virus), being outdoors – masked and sanitised, of course – is relatively low risk.
While social-distancing is still of the utmost importance, the eased lockdown laws (and longer days) have opened up a slew of exhilarating activities to suit all tastes and occasions. From scenic drives to full-moon kayaking trips, food markets, ceramic painting and Winelands mountain-biking trails, Cape Town has loads to keep you and yours entertained!

Kayak at full moon

Once a month from March until October, experienced paddlers and novices alike are invited to watch the sun set across the ocean – and the full moon as it rises over the bay – from a kayak!

Swim in a tidal pool

One of the Tidal Pools along the coats - Brass Bell
Tucked between St James and Kalk Bay, this easily missed – and often overlooked – tidal pool is one of the most beautiful along the coast. To get to it, walk along the subway under the railway line. It’s best to get there in the early morning, as it loses the sun behind the mountains in the afternoon. Large boulders in the pool invite bathers to languish and contemplate the horizon… And the low wall means the water is kept clean with a constant flow of freshwater breaking over the wall’s edge. It’s also a fabulous whale-watching spot in season.
Covid precautions Maintain a two-metre distance from others at all times. Wear your mask when you’re not swimming.

Visit an alpaca loom

What’s an alpaca, you ask? While they may – at first glance – look like some kind of mix between a giraffe and a goat, they are actually relatives of the bactrian and dromedary camels from Asia and Africa, although they originate in South America (mainly Peru). And on this farm in southern Paarl, you’ll have a front-row seat to a herd of alpacas, as you enjoy a takeaway coffee or tea from the farm coffee shop. There’s also a loom, where you can purchase a variety of fabrics woven from alpaca wool, such as shawls and blankets to keep the winter chills at bay. You can also shop the products online.

Picnic along Chapman’s Peak Drive

One of the most scenic drives in the world, let alone South Africa, Chapman’s Peak Drive offers views that locals (and obviously visitors) never tire of. On one side, the mountain face forms an impenetrable wall of rock, while on the other, the mountain drops away sharply before the vast ocean – Cape Town’s unique topography at its breathtaking best!
As you follow the coastal road between Hout Bay and Noordhoek, you’ll pass rugged mountains, pristine white-sand beaches and vibrant fishing harbours. It truly is a marvel of engineering, having been effectively carved out of the mountain face over the course of its seven-year construction, which was ordered by Sir Nicolas Frederick de Waal (the Cape’s first administrator).
Pack a picnic, and enjoy the views at one of the many lookout points.
Covid precautions Drivers and passengers should be masked when stopping at the toll gate and lookout points.
Cost R47 (toll-road tariff for light motor vehicles)
Important note Chapman’s Peak Drive may be closed during severe weather, or as a result of road maintenance. Contact the customer service line (021 791 8220) to check the current status.

Meet a pig who paints

The image of the idyllic farm setting, inhabited by cheerful farm animals, is sadly not the reality in many cases. In truth, horrific factory farms, where cruelty runs rampant, haunts our food industry.
Farm Sanctuary SA has taken it upon itself to rescue animals from the brutality of these factory farms, and place them in a safe sanctuary that resembles the Utopian farm settings we read about in children’s novels. Happy inhabitants include Pigcasso, the world’s only painting pig; and Baloo, a male cow rescued from an informal settlement on Route 62.
