The power of flowers

Chart Farm, a peaceful farm in Wynberg, a mere 15-minute drive from the CBD, is home to a large garden filled with a variety of roses in almost every colour you can imagine. It also happens to be the only place in the Cape peninsula where you can pick your own, from mid-October right up until the end of May.

When you’re done picking roses…

Have a cup of tea and scones at The View coffee shop – it serves breakfast and lunch, and an array of cakes that you can enjoy while taking in the scent of roses and views of the Constantia Valley. There’s also a farm stall next door, where you can also stock up on tasty treats to take home.

See the colourful houses, smell the spices and hear a call to prayers of the local mosque. This part of Cape Town is a unique, real gem and you will totally fall in love with it during our 90 minute walking tour.

V&A Waterfront Tour
This Walk departs daily at 10.30am and 3pm from our V&A ticket office located just outside the Two Oceans Aquarium. Hear the tales of Table Bay, more of the nautical history and explore this fascinating working harbour whilst joining this 90 minute walking tour.

St George’s Cathedral

Affectionately known as “the People’s Cathedral” for its role in the struggle against apartheid, the church kept its doors open to people of all races throughout the apartheid era. Here, after Archbishop Desmond Tutu led a mass demonstration of 30 000 people in 1989, he coined the term the “rainbow nation” to describe South Africa’s diverse population.
Learn more about the cathedral’s interesting history – for example, the foundation stone was laid in 1901 by the future King George V and can be seen from the bottom of Government Avenue leading into the Company’s Garden.

South African Jewish Museum

The South African Jewish Museum offers engaging accounts of South African Jewish history.
The South African Jewish Museum is a moving tribute to and detailed account of one of the great Jewish communities of the diaspora. The building offers visitors a poignant and moving experience with bold architectural design, interactive multimedia displays and engaging accounts of South African Jewish history.
The late former President Nelson Mandela officially opened the museum in December 2000, and you can watch the award-winning documentary Nelson Mandela: A Righteous Man screened daily. The venue also has exhibitions, including works by celebrated South African artists such as Irma Stern and William Kentridge, and by Marc Chagall.

District Six Museum

Explore the  District Six Museum by yourself, or choose to be guided by a former resident.
In 1966, the South African government of the time swooped on District Six as part of its efforts to enforce apartheid, forcibly removing its occupants and declaring the area a “whites-only” zone.
Decades later, the District Six Museum is a reminder of these tragic events, but also a symbol of return and restitution to former residents and the people affected.
See an impressive collection of historical photographs, paintings, artefacts, physical remains such as street signs, books and studies, as well as audio-visual recordings from District Six, most of which were donated by former residents.
Either explore the museum by yourself, or choose to be guided by a former resident. We recommend the latter to enrich your experience at this heritage site.

Castle of Good Hope

The Castle of Good Hope was built between 1666 and 1679 by Dutch administrator Jan van Riebeeck of the Dutch East India Company. The oldest surviving colonial building in South Africa, the Castle of Good Hope is located in the heart of Cape Town, opposite the Grand Parade and near the magnificent City Hall.

Animal Experiences are so very rewarding and South African has incredible National Parks - ideal for seeing all sorts of wildlife IN THE WILD! The article below highlights the issues that are no longer "cool to do"

We have travelled to most of the National Parks in South Africa and can highly recommend Kruger National Park, Pilansberg National Park, and Addo Elephant Park. The smaller parks are also well worth visiting, time permitting.

Just do be cognitive of the fact that these are wild animals - stay in your vehicle at all times and just enjoy and absorb the incredible sight of these magnificent animals in their natural habitats. Also remember that these animals can roam at will so if you drive for an hour and spot nothing, don't give up - a huge elephant may be browsing right around the next corner! Take care to avoid male elephants - they are normally loners and can be extremely scary if in musth. Highly aggressive as testosterone levels can be 60 times greater at these times.

Global tourism heavyweights Airbnb and TripAdvisor have shunned wildlife interactions and experiences without conservation backbone. 

Elephant-back rides, lion cub petting and kissing dolphins, among others, won't be featured on Airbnb, according to strict ethical standards for its new 'Animal Experiences' platform.

TripAdvisor, too, has distanced itself from attractions involved in breeding or importing captive whales and dolphins used for public display. In 2016, TripAdvisor implemented an animal welfare programme prohibiting ticket sales to facilities offering interactions with captive wildlife or endangered species. The facilities can still be reviewed on the platform, however.

TripAdvisor Spokesperson, James Kay, says the company is now ending its commercial relationships with facilities that do not have, or are not in the process of developing alternative environments for captive marine life.

Tourism association SATSA has welcomed the developments.

"Wildlife is the bedrock of South Africa's tourism," says Keira Powers, SATSA Animal Interaction Committee chairperson. "And we have the privileged position of offering tourists engagement with the wild and with wildlife in authentic settings."

The new Airbnb Animal Experiences are featured in consultation with World Animal Protection and hosted by accredited conservationists or caring experts "as an antidote to typical tourist attractions that are notorious for ethical concerns”, Airbnb says.

The Penguin Paddle in Simon's Town in the Western Cape is one of the South African experiences on offer. According to host Jon Monsoon, a career conservationist, Airbnb waives all fees for this experience so that 100% of the proceeds go directly to the cause.

Airbnb further says it is cautious of places that may call themselves 'rescues' and 'sanctuaries' but don’t operate in the animals’ best interest. Therefore, "places using wild animals for direct interactions with travellers or in performances, won't be tolerated”.

"Neither will those that buy or sell wild or wild-hybrid animals or products derived from them, or breed wild animals or wild-hybrid animals, unless they are part of an official, recognised breeding programme where the animals are being responsibly released back into the wild."

These global policy changes precede a highly-anticipated Guide for Evaluating Captive Animal Attractions & Activities in South Africa, to be released by SATSA at the end of this month. According to Powers, the guide will help the South African animal interaction industry navigate new territory.

The setting On the R27 north, about 50 minutes from Cape Town’s city centre, the Groote Post sign beckons you to turn right onto an upwards-winding gravel road. Shortly after the ocean appears on your left, followed by scenes of farm life and mountainous panoramas. Ten minutes later you arrive Groote Post Vineyards – understated, yet charming as anything. So much so that we’re almost hesitant to share this West Coast gem! The Manor House (where the restaurant is situated) is preceded by a lush lawn and established trees that cast their shade over spaced-out picnic tables. The food – which is served without frills in generous portions – is utterly delicious. Parents can request the table next to the jungle gym. On windy or even chilly days, picnics can be served in the restaurant’s sheltered courtyard.
